Things to do in Norwich: streets, riverside and culture

Build a Norwich day around the Cathedral Close, Wensum walks, museums and performance venues, with green spaces and independent food stops along the way.

Start in the Cathedral Close

The Close gives you space to slow down before heading back into the busy streets. Norwich Cathedral offers a substantial visit in its own right, with architecture, exhibitions and a programme of services and events. Check the current visitor information when planning around worship or a particular activity.

Choose a museum that matches your interests

Norwich Castle and the Museum of Norwich at the Bridewell offer different ways into the city and county’s story. The Castle is a major museum destination; the Bridewell focuses on Norwich’s people and industries. Look at the current displays and access information before trying to fit both into a short day.

Make time for the river

Walk towards Pull’s Ferry or Bishop Bridge to see the Wensum beyond the shopping streets. A riverside section works well between visits rather than as an extra journey at the end. Keep to public paths, look at conditions on the day and choose a route you can comfortably retrace if a section is closed or unsuitable.

Add a garden or a stretch of green

The Plantation Garden offers a quieter visit just outside the central shopping area, near St John the Baptist Cathedral. For a more open walk, Norwich’s parks and Mousehold Heath give other options. They are separate destinations, so choose one that fits your route instead of assuming everything is beside the market.

Plan the evening around the venue

Norwich Theatre Royal, the Playhouse, Norwich Arts Centre, the Maddermarket and Norwich Puppet Theatre each have their own programmes and locations. Check the actual venue on the ticket, then choose food and transport around it. The Forum is another useful place to look for exhibitions, events and community activities.

Leave room for the smaller discoveries

A market lunch, a bookshop browse or a café in the Lanes can be as enjoyable as another major attraction. For a family trip, mix one planned visit with an easy walk and a place to sit. Our listings include local food businesses and leisure venues, with direct contact details for checking practical arrangements.
